The desert

"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil" (Matt 4:1).

A common teaching of today says if you do all the right things in your Christian life, you will be blessed and never experience problems in your life. FALSE! The Bible says that we will encounter many problems during our lifetime.

"In this world you will have trouble. but take heart I have overcome the world" John 16:33

Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Why would God lead His Son into the desert to be tempted? Why would God lead you and I into the desert?

The desert is a place to learn something about ourselves. It is the place where we determine if we will truly live by every Word of God, and not by bread alone. When Satan tempted Jesus in the desert, Jesus responded to every temptation by repeating the Word of God regarding that temptation.

This is also the way we must respond to the temptations that are brought our way. We need to have the Word of God written on our hearts in order to know how to respond to any given situation. The Bible tell us, "the truth shall make you free." It is knowing and doing the will of God that allows us to live free.

The desert is quite often a place of silence. However, it is also a place where the devil will speak loudest because you are in a place of weakness and the comforts of your normal life are nowhere to be found. A place where God is often silent but can also be a place where God speaks loudest. The word desert comes from the Hebrew word "dahbaar" which means "to speak."
If God has placed you in the desert, I urge you to listen carefully to the voice you hear.....is it edifying, encouraging, building you up? Is it condemning or convicting? Is blaming or causing you doubt? Determine who's voice you hear and spend time in the Word of God so that you may understand what you hear and will withstand the temptation that comes in the desert place.

Chasing Miracles

On this wild adventure I've seen many things, heard many stories and met amazing people. Seen healings, seen deliverance, seen grace and salvation. I've seen mercy and passion, seen lives transformed. All very awesome but the things I've learned far out weigh the signs and wonders. I wish I had elegant words to express how free it feels to not chase after miracles to know that God is God and He doesn't have to prove who He is. "Jesus told him, because you have seen you have believed, blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." John 20:29

I wonder how many times the Lord has spoken to us through simple things and we ignore, or simply don't see because we're too busy looking for the miraculous. Like Elijah standing at the entrance of the cave....Not in the Earthquake, Fire or thunder but in a small still voice.

He is my "father, dad, poppa" he doesn't raise his voice to me. According to I Corinthians 13, He is patient, gentle and kind. Not boasting or showy. I've learned that miracles, signs and wonders are for the unbelievers, so that they my see and believe.

For those of us that get to be witness to the everyday miracles it's a choice to look for the hand of God it all situations: delays in traffic to prevent an accident and keep us safe, The urge to help someone or simply make that call to encourage a friend, In the birth of a child or the saving grace of salvation. The face of child that learns or sees something for the first time. The awesome display of stars and a sun that rises and sets perfectly day after day. Aren't those signs and wonders? Do we really need miracles from far off lands to know that He is who is.....The Great I AM, who loves us just because He loves us.

Update from Africa

Sorry it's been so long since I've written, but here are some of the things going on here.

The schedule is basically the same: Monday -Day off; Tuesday - Men's prayer breakfast, WH & sons Realty Office, house chores, Afracanz bible study. Wednesday - Loweveld Primary school (currently talking about bullying as a result of an incident in Jo-burg, student took a sword to school and killed classmate) Doing Pray walk around school this week (joshua & Jericho) house chores, divorced women's group. Thursday - Elmadre's Meat market (I've started wrting scripture verses on the wall outside the building for the public, changes every week.) House chores and 2 groups at the house in the evening. Friday - Lumber City at 8 and GPM 10 - 12 (GPM is a technical school teaching blacks how to get a job, write resumes, interview techniques, and how to start a business. We see 2 groups back to back) house chores get ready for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are crazy, people coming in and out of the house.

We have been invited to visit several businesses, on one Tuesday we were at WH& sons in the morning and then spent the entire day out with a dentist, radiologist, land developer, and farmer. We prayed at their offices and their homes asking God to be the ruler over the business and seeking his favor and provision. That was a long day 5 am to 5 pm it was soo cool. Another day we had an emergency request at a Toyota dealership where the employees and management were having disputes, we prayed for God's will to be done and asked that he bless the circumstances and atmosphere to change and create a place of peace in the workplace there. We were extremely blessed when we were asked to pray over a 25,000 hectare land reserve ....it was a beautiful day, we rode in the back of the truck praying over the land and asking God to reside in the land and be evident to all who would enter there.

House Chores include turning over rooms, changing linens, sweeping, preparing meals, washing dishes, making people feel at home as they leave the mission feld or as they enter into the mission field. We see missionaries come off the field burntout, brokedown and beatup; we provide comfort food, clean linens, hot showers and God's love as much as possible. However, we also see idealistic newcomers with grand visions and dreams, we try to give them insight and reality, things to keep them safe and sain while on the field.

Ministry at the house happens either in the prayer-room or in the classroom and can range from 10-15 people to 100 people, we set up chairs, tables and refreshment areas including cups/glasses, coffee/tea and water, flatware, you get the idea. They ask for it we try to provide it. I get to meet a lot of people and have opportunity to befriend them and get to share with them in their struggles, dreams, and ministry.

This week I'm in Mozambique, Angie Wheeler a missionary that is a frequent flyer at Ehmke house is having some physical issues (severe tendenitous) and has small children and a thriving ministry so I offered to help out for a week till she can fully use her arms and hands.

I'll write more details and tell you about God healing a boy that was run over by a car and the Lady He set free from Drug addiction and the growing faith in the businesses soon.

Leaving the Race

First let me say thank you for your continued support financially, emotionally and thru your prayers, This trip could not be possible without you. My time with the World Race has been phenomenal, I have learned a lot, seen and experienced more than I thought imaginable.

As most of you know I've been in Nelspruit, South Africa now for about 2 months. After a back injury in late June, my team went to Malawi and I stayed behind to recover. It was during that time that I really got involved with the Marketplace Ministry and fell in love with the people, So much that leaving them now breaks my heart. I have a vision for a "christian" working women's association. A place where women in business can look to for spiritual guidance and accountabelity, where mature business women can nurture and mentor young women. This would include all aspects of life not just the workplace, but personally, family and home as well. There is a luncheon being planned to launch this endeavor....I am very excited about the prospects for this ministry. My love of the markeplace ministry continues to grow.

I have seen amazing things in the market place here. People praying for God to provide customers, orders, the release of materials and prompt payment. More importantly I have seen faith and hope in the eyes and lives of the people grow, as has mine. Seeing God provide in awesome ways example: Paul and De'von own a small business, called Lumber City. They make custom cabinets and kitchens. Do beautiful work! The were having trouble collecting money due to them. We began to pray about it and asked God to shake free any monies that were due......He did! Several months ago, a customer bought a boat instead of paying what he owed, Paul was furious. After many attempts to collect they wrote it off as uncollectible.....Last week the guy showed up to make a down payment and make payment arrangements. Praise God! The same business lost a huge supplier, saying he couldn't do it for R5000 anymore....the next day a man called asking to be their supplier for R4200....that's the kinda thing that happens all the time in the market place here. Simply because they asked God to be the CEO of their business.

I tell you this, so that maybe you will understand when I say that after much prayer and diligent consultation, I have decided to leave the race and stay in South Africa until November. I will continue to post blogs and relay information about what God is doing here.
I do realize that you signed on for the world race, I trust that God will give you the same peace about this transition as He has given me. I pray that thru my blogs and photos you will come to love South Africa and the people too.

The World Race as graciously agreed to let me continue under their umbrella and support funds will be routed from the world race account to my account in monthly stipens, records and receipts will be kept for tax and accounting purposes

I welcome all questions and comments......we are in this together as the body of Christ.

I'd been asked to do this mural several wks ago but thru missed communication and a back injury had not been able to do it until now. The AIM contact here in Nelspruit, Lynn arranged for me to go to Mrs Ella's during school break and work on the wall for the baby's room. She felt they (the babies) were not being stimulated and that this might do the trick. Many of you know how fond of cartoons I am (not very) but I did my best and used as many colors as possible. so take a look, let me know what you think. :)

Servant -Leader

"Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matt 20:26-28).

A rider on horseback, many years ago, came upon a squad of soldiers who were trying to move a heavy piece of timber. A corporal stood by, giving lordly orders to "heave." But the piece of timber was a trifle too heavy for the squad.

"Why don't you help them?" asked the quiet man on the horse, addressing the important corporal.

"Me? Why, I'm a corporal sir!" Dismounting, the stranger carefully took his place with the soldiers.

"Now, all together boys - heave!" he said. And the big piece of timber slid into place. The stranger mounted his horse and addressed the corporal.

"The next time you have a piece of timber for your men to handle, corporal, send for the commander-in-chief."

The horseman was George Washington, the first American president.

Whenever someone mentions your name does the word "servant" come to their mind? Jesus modeled servant-hood to twelve young men and changed the world. If you want to see others become servants you must model it yourself. George Washington was a great example of a Christian leader who was a great soldier and servant to those he led. No wonder God used this great servant to establish a new nation.

Moses was also a great leader of men. The Bible says that Moses was the most humble man on earth. That is why God could use him to lead hundreds of thousands out of slavery into the Promised Land.

Pray that God makes you a humble servant leader of others

South Africa I -Backdoor

So, I 'm sure you've all been wondering what I've been doing in South Africa....

When we first arrived we (my team and I) were at a feeding center in Backdoor. Backdoor is so small it's not on the maps. This is where we met Liz, missionary from England, Linda, from England and Tammy, who's from St. Louis.

The feeding center provides meals for the children in the community and is also the home of the Iris Bible School, where pastors are trained and encouraged as well as establish a network with other Pastors and Missionaries.

It is also the Home of the newly constructed Education center.....complete with computer room, Library, preschool and prayer room.The entire campus is secured by a wall which has been painted to depict the creation. The result of mine and Liz's handy work.

Tammy leads the puppet ministry here. They have been blessed, all of their puppets and equipment were a gift from OneWay Street. (The same company that I use at home) So Matty and Mandy found a new home. after traveling to South America and South Africa the puppets have a new home with the team from Backdoor.

The area is located on top of the mountain, water is always an issue, there is never enough and often is done without. Poverty is high, work is scarce; but the children are happy and love to make new friends and play with old friends. One day I played catch with 5 older kids (10, 11, 12 yr olds) for hours.....the ball we used was made of plastic bags rolled up.

South Africa II - preskool

Team "Z" spent the morning at Miss Ella's preschool.........

We arrived about 10:00 AM to the most beautiful faces. The children all ran to meet us and the hugs began....some didn't want to let go.

We played on the playground for a while

..then came lunchtime 1/2 sandwich (bologna spread and butter) and a cup of tea w/milk.

after they finished they all stacked their dishes and through away their trash.

Now it's craft time, each student received a paper plate and 3 crayons (3-4 people to a table) We drew flowers on one side and a lions face on the other side.

then is was snack time......each person was given a "dum-dum" sucker and a bag of juice.

South Africa III - Marketplace

I've been so blessed by being in Nelspruit, and staying at the Ehmke (M-Kee) house.

Poppa Kent has taken us under his wing and allowed, no encouraged, us to participate in the market place ministry..Monday is our day off.....so we just go to the "Forum" (shelter and feeding center)

Tuesday we are up and out before 8:00 AM. We spend the morning with the staff of a Realty office. We share coffee, tea and testimony about what God is doing in and around us; we invite the Lord to rule over their business and bless their efforts. We pray for specific needs of the employees and their families.

Wednesday we visit the Loweweld Primary School, where we lead the student body in P&W, a short lesson and prayer. awesome things are happening there....the children pray for one another and healing happens.

Thursday we start the day at the Meat Market; A family business owned by Wimpy and his dad, Razzi. We usually sing a song or two, share a story (Testimony) or life lesson and pray....The employees have begun to pray for their customers as well as each other.

Friday is the day we share coffee with the owners and staff of Lumber City (cabinet makers) a young partnership. The ministry is the same as the realty office, the people are different but their needs and desires are the same.

There is a business men's group that meets at the house also on Tuesday.

We've been discussing a Working Women's luncheon, with the idea of igniting a regular group of working women that mentor and uplift other working women, as well as network their businesses.

We have seen amazing things in these businesses and the lives of the staff in just a short time. These shops and the people have stolen my heart.....I love the market place.

South Africa lV - Forumn

I love the Shelter/feeding center. The people are so sweet!!

They feed about 40-50 people 3 meals a day, 7days a week.

After breakfast each day we bagged fresh veggies for distribution in food bags every week

we separated and bagged fresh spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green peppers, squash

we gave away 87 bags this week.....

The women come to pick them up wait in the parking lot

they sing so beautifully ......

I recorded it to use as a soundtrack for a video blog at the end of the month

Matt shared a message of encouragement and prayed for them.

Three Things

"I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe" (Eph 1:18-19).

Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he encourages believers to experience three important things in their spiritual lives that he experienced personally. As a good mentor, he desires those he is leading to follow his example.

First, to have the eyes of your heart enlightened in order to know the hope to which He has called you. God has called each of us to a future and a hope. (Jerm 29:11) Many of us don't ever realize the dreams we envision.

Second, God wants you to know there is an inheritance for each believer in Jesus Christ. There are riches to be had - not financial riches - but spiritual riches that are laid up for every saint. As you are faithful to His calling in your life, there will be a reward for your faithfulness.

Third, God wants you to tap into the power that is available to every believer. Paul often tells believers not to look at his persuasive words, but the power of God in his life. He wants you to know this same power is available to you. After all, Jesus said we would do even greater works than He did after He sent the Holy Spirit to us.

I pray that God reveals the hope that exists in you, be encouraged that there is an inheritance waiting you, and know that you have that power in you just waiting to be released by the excersing of your faith.

New Law .....thinking out loud

the old testament gave law to the jewish nation thru the 10 commandments the law of mose...the new testament gave us a new law thru Jesus with only 2 commands love God ad love others however thru the shed blood and resurrection of Jesus we are free from the law and condemnation...allowing us to choose to walk in the spirit. to be over comers of darkness and sin.

we no longer live in fear of right or wrong, good and evil; rather every day we strive to be more like him. producing fruit of spirit, feeding the sheep, and living as one body. sounds simple doesn't it...and it is,with His help...none of us can do it in our own natural strength. that's why the father sent the helper...because he knew we'd need help. he like all father knows that kids fall down, make mistakes, screw up and need direction sometimes

Power & Authority

Why is there illness, pain, suffering?

If the the Lord Jesus said "This then is how you should pray...Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:8 & 10. There are no blind, deaf, sick, or hurting people in heaven.

If the Lord Jesus himself said .....these things you've seen, you will do even greater than this. John 1:50

If we have been given all authority in Heaven and earth...by the Lord Himself......Matthew 28:18-20

If we are truly adopted into the family of God as joint heirs with Jesus .... Ephesians 1:11-14

If we've been given the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.... Ephesians 1:18-23

If God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow....when did He stop talking to us? When did we stop listening?

What father makes promises to his children and doesn't hold up his end.....what father offers gifts to some children and not all of his children....Not my father, not your father.

Then Why don't we walk in it?

Is the Bible the true word of God?

Is God honest and trustworthy?

Is God Faithful to keep His promises?

what holds us captive.....and keeps us from truly being sons and daughters of the most powerful King, The creator of the universe.

So my challenge is this.....ask the Lord to give you understanding, wisdom and knowledge....1 Corinthians 2:6-16 that you may see the unseen things, beware of others needs,and know what the father would do....In order to grow the fruit of the Spirit that lives in each of us.......and become more like him.

Speak health and life over one another. thinking all others more important than ourselves.

Jesus didn't ASK the Father to heal people because He and the Father are one and the same at heart....If you've seen me you've seen the father......Jesus simply spoke it into being. We can have that same relationship and power if we just accept it and walk in it everyday.

What do you mean we can't get in!?

Our accommodation at Backdoor, South Africa is quite lovely. Don't worry, you won't find a Hilton or Holidy Inn Express here. In fact, you won't even find Backdoor on a map because to this world, it doesn't exist, which creates problems when you're trying to find a locksmith.

One day this past week the girls decided to get the key stuck in their bedroom door and lock themselves out... with precious commodities locked in the room (like drinking water). Terri and Sarah spent quite a length of time with some of the neighborhood boys trying to bust the lock, but to no avail, they couldn't seem to break in.

That's what pastors are for.

Here are the girls, rather sad to be locked out.

Just another angle... makes it easier.

In the meantime, the girls make it look good.

I decide to join in... because I make it look even better.

So, naturally, they celebrate with the "Hiro" cheer!

And I, again, decide to make this celebration look good.

All in all, it was a good and adventurous evening. There was a large potential for Satan to really win this victory, using frustration and our lack of comfort to thwart our joy from the day; however, God is often the most victorious in situations like these and we had a great night! It was fun and we were sure to thank God for a terrific evening... by praying and watching our evening episode of "Heroes".

for yourselves. I will say, the things you're most generally concerned about;

RAISING THE MONEY

SLEEPING A TENT

HIKING LONG DISTANCES

CARRYING YOUR BELONGINGS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR ON YOUR BACK

FORIEGN LANGUAGES

PHYSICAL STRENGTH & STAMINA

EATING FOOD YOU DON'T RECOGNIZE

are not the hard parts......rather living in community with strangers .....requires much grace and patience.

you'll need to be willing to have all rights, expectations and privileges stripped away. Are you willing to come to a place in yourself that challenges and most often breaks everything you have come to know and believe about you.....your faith ......your religion. Are you willing to challenge your thinking and beliefs and realize quite often it's not true.....

please Don't misunderstand, you'll meet amazing people, see some of the most beautiful things in all creation, participate in worship like no other on earth, have opportunity for great adrenaline hyping fun & fear........But the biggest adventure is the inward journey between you and God....just you two.

It's the hardest, best, most fun, most lonely, loudest, challenging, scary, crazy thing I've ever done.........I regret I waited to be almost 50 to do it..........The question is... can you afford not to do it?

Sorry I've disappointed you by not blogging or posting stories......will you settle for an apology for leaving you out of what the Lord is doing in me.

Sometimes we don't have words to explain a situation or condition so we don't talk about it.

Loosing ones self to find your identity is not an easy or pleasant thing. We humans don't like to discuss unpleasant things especially when they are happening to us. :)

suffice it to say I am fine (other than the broken crown and the new dental work) God has been very good to me....I am now in Gordan's Bay, south Africa, which is a suburb of Capetown. I am staying at a house on the hill so I can see the sunset everyday over the Bay....the Lord knows that's one of my favorite things in creation. He has given me something new every day, no two the same. (I have lots of pictures)

I am truly falling in love with my team, each person unique and beautiful. The Lord has revealed to me what grace really is and how we walk more fully in his grace when we more freely give grace to others. His love the same, the more we extend it the more we experience it.

do I sound preachy....I don't mean to, I just want so badly for each of us to discover for ourselves what the Abba Papa has to give us; how very much really loves each of us. We can't work for it,

pay for it, or earn it by anything we do or don't do. Nothing we can do will make Him love us any more or any less, whether we choose to follow him or not. Do I have that kinda love, grace, patience.....not in my own strength but through HIM we have the same power and authority that raised Jesus from the dead.....there is nothing we can't do through and in HIM who is the Great I AM.

It's like the "church" being the CHRUCH......we have to walk in His love and grace as individuals in order for the body to come together as the church, caring, supporting, providing for, and really loving others regardless of being paid back, rewarded or even being acknowledged. Because we do it out of love for HIM, through HIS spirit and not in our own power.

"Being" in Africa

Just wanted to drop a quick note to share what Team "Z" is doing in Africa....Gordan's Bay, South Africa to be Exact!

Just "Being" spending time listening to God, working on our individual relationships with Him. We agreed, we don't want to be "doing" anything just for the sake of doing.....So when the Lord tells us to move or do we will but not until then......I have some pictures to post of Bollivia and of Africa......but until I feel the Lord really has something for me to share I'm not going to be blogging just for the sake of blogging.......I promise when He speaks......you'll know.

We got information on the next destination of our journey last night and it looks like this:

Sunday morning have Church Service

Head home to pack, Catch a plane to Lima at 9:40 pm

Arrive Lima 11:00 pm, layover till 1: something AM

arrive LaPaus Bolivia approx 3:30 AM

1 hr ride to Hostel (not hotel)

after 3-4 days of debrief we start ministry with an orphanage in a place called Coachabamba for about 10 days then off to the rainforest for another 10 days where we will be constructing and doing manual labor They tell me the days get up into the 80-90s then back to Coachabamba for the remaining time of our trip for teh groundbreaking of a 5th orphanage.

That should land us about the 16th of April and then off to Africa.

I promised Carly I would sit down and answer all her questions, so here goes:

Im doing great, my cold is much better and the Lord blesses me everyday.

Right now I am in Iquitos, Peru......the gateway to the Amazon its a pretty big city about 1/2 million people live here.

But for the past couple of weeks Ive been in Nauta..the Jungle living on a boat called el Bein Samaritan (the good samaritan)

my friend Merilyn and her children. She didnt know any english and I know little spanish but we walked to church together everyday and she started comming to the worship services on Wed and Sun.....pray that she continues.

These are my boat buddies, these guys would hang around the boat, swimming, running errands, they loved to color. one day I took out some pages and crayons and all of the sudden there were 40 kids coloring..Franz (Frank) the big guy on the left is my new BFF

Can a leader truly be humble berfore those they lead? Can one expose their weakness and still lead effectively? How does that effect the team? Does that cause doubt and question in leaedership ability and capability.

These were questions I posted in a recent blog Prize winning Roses the answer is No.

After exposing my concerns about how our team was coming together (rather not coming together) and some members of our team couldnt get past the age gap and the comment I thought I left my mom at home came to light. It was obvious that my role as leader of this team is not the best I can do for this team.......

Funny how God works, He began speaking to me about a change, I was preparing myself to talk to Rusty.....(Squad Leader) All the while Rusty was preparing to talk to me.....The convesation was easy, a decision had been made and a new leader was choosen.

How do I feel? relieved, freaking relieved.......now I am free to get to know my teamates without fear of being their leader or their mother.....my prayer is that we become friends, family, functional family, loving, trusting, commited family, working together to advance the kingdom.....Thats what I signed up for.

I cant wait to see this garden in a few months full of beautiful blooms and bold colors.
